A NEW CRITICAL THINKING HIGH SCHOOL COURSE

Quick! What are your thoughts on race, racism, stereotypes, and even the dreaded “N” Word? Have you ever challenged your own way of thinking? Are your thoughts on these subjects your own, or were you indoctrinated to believe certain things? How do you think children and teenagers view these topics today? How did you view them when you were in high school? A new course titled The Black Experience In America explores the minds of the typical teenage high school student in the United States regarding many topics that are not usually discussed with teenagers. Their thoughts are freely expressed and challenged to force them to critically think and assess and reassess their own thoughts and beliefs, not to necessarily change them. As many of these discussions can be difficult to have, they are still important to be had as the children will be the future of our nation. This course gives insight into what our high school students and our children may be thinking on many issues that not only affect Black Americans, but ALL Americans as well.

Course Overview:

This course is a critical thinking course that examines the different experiences, perspectives, and cultures of so-called Black/African Americans from the early beginnings of America to the present day. The course examines many different aspects of Black people and will also examine the struggles as well as the triumphs of Black/African Americans through many different lenses. The course looks to dispel the myth that all Black/African Americans think the same on a variety of different topics concerning those who identify as Black/African American. “Controversial” topics are examined that are not typically discussed in a traditional school setting. Students are free to express their thoughts, and ideas based on specific facts presented throughout the course on a variety of different subjects, and their thoughts and ideas will be challenged.

Critical Thinking, debate, discussion, and analysis are critical to success in this course.
